Silk embroidery has occupied important status in Chinese history of arts and crafts.
It is the most famous handcraft in China and globally renowned for its refinement,
elegance and beauty. During ancient times, silk embroidery was only supplied for the
royal family and aristocrats, and was used to symbolize social status.
The main characteristics of this type of silk embroidery are flat, neat,
fine, and close stitches, resulting in a harmonious, bright, even and smooth surface.
There is one-sided embroidery and double-sided embroidery, and many types of
stitches are employed. Double-sided embroidery has color, patterns and stitches on each side of the work.
The intricacy and beauty of this method of silk embroidery demonstrates extraordinary artistic
accomplishment, unprecedented in all decorative fiber arts including all other Chinese embroidery art.
